We call on our County Elected Officials to work for an end to executions in California because:

1) At a time of major government budget deficits, thousand of teachers are being laid off, criminal justice budgets are being reduced, violence prevention programs are being curtailed,

2) The death penalty costs the county and state much more than the alternative of life imprisonment without possibility of parole. The death penalty does not make us safer and it is a procedure that we can no longer afford.

3) There is a risk of executing innocent persons. 4) Justice is not equal justice
because the rate of death sentences varies widely from County to County. 5) The death penalty isvreserved most frequently for the poor and people of color with poor legal representation.
